Mould After Winter? Here’s How to Stop It Returning
Winter may be coming to an end, but if you've noticed black spots appearing on your walls or ceilings, you're not alone. Cooler temperatures, condensation, and increased moisture during winter create the perfect conditions for mould and fungal growth.
Many homeowners simply clean the visible mould, only to find it returns a few weeks or months later. The reason is simple: unless the underlying cause is addressed, mould will continue to grow.
Why Does Mould Keep Coming Back?
Mould thrives wherever moisture is present. Simply wiping the surface removes what you can see, but often leaves spores behind, allowing the problem to return.
Common causes include:
- ✓Poor ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries.
- ✓Condensation caused by cold walls and warm indoor air.
- ✓Roof leaks or damaged waterproofing.
- ✓Damp walls caused by cracks or failed exterior coatings.
- ✓Rising damp or plumbing leaks.
- ✓Areas with little sunlight or constant humidity.
Unless the source of the moisture is eliminated, mould will almost always return.
Step 1: Clean the Mould Properly
Before repainting, the mould must be treated correctly.
Using an appropriate fungicidal cleaner, such as WeatherPrufe Fungal Wash, helps kill mould and fungal spores rather than simply removing surface staining.
For best results:
Three steps to deal with mould etc:
1. Clean what you can see using Tornado.
2. Kill what you can’t see using undiluted Fungal Wash. Apply and leave on affected surface for 6-8 hours to sterilise the roots, then wash/wipe off.
3. Repaint using a WeatherPrufe Pure Acrylic Paint with fungicide additive (mixed into the paint on request).
Skipping this step can trap mould beneath new paint, causing it to reappear.
Step 2: Fix the Moisture Problem
Cleaning alone will not solve the issue if moisture continues entering the building.
Inspect your property for:
- ✓Roof leaks
- ✓Cracked exterior walls
- ✓Failed waterproofing
- ✓Damaged gutters or downpipes
- ✓Plumbing leaks
- ✓Condensation caused by poor ventilation
Addressing these problems before repainting is essential for a long-lasting result.
Prevent Mould Before Next Winter
A few simple maintenance steps can significantly reduce the chances of mould returning:
- ✓Improve airflow by opening windows regularly.
- ✓Use extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens.
- ✓Repair roof leaks promptly.
- ✓Seal exterior cracks before the rainy season.
- ✓Ensure gutters and downpipes drain correctly.
- ✓Address signs of damp before they become serious.
